The blind woman finished her story and sat back while a bit of a murmur went round the hall like a ripple.

“I’ve told you all my story,” she said “and it’s a true one. Some of ye’s know that it is. And now I’ll bid you all a goodnight.” Nudging the woman beside her, who had brought her to the hall, she stood up. Her friend guided her out into the night. Another lady closed the hall door behind them. For a few minutes there was silence – people not really knowing what to say – but eventually the conversations resumed.

Later I asked the old man whom she had called Daniel who the blind woman was. He said that he had known her years ago but he couldn’t remember her name. She’d moved away to live with some relative – maybe even a son – who farmed away up in the mountains and he hadn’t seen her for years. But, he added with a bit of a laugh, she obviously remembered him. He knew the woman that she was with for she was a neighbour of his own, and would ask who she was and get back to me. I never heard from him again. But he did say that the story was true for he had heard it himself from other people and he knew the woman from the story, and her husband.

Down the years, the blind woman’s story has stayed with me and on dark evenings I often wonder if, away from the modern world, the Death Cart, actually does travel the lonely roads, lifting those who have died and carrying them into the Afterlife?
